Gian Francesco Malipiero was an Italian composer, musicologist, music teacher, and editor, born on 18 March 1882 into an aristocratic family in Venice. Encountering family troubles, his broken relationship with his father led him back to Venice to study music independently, copying works by Monteverdi and Frescobaldi and cultivating a love for Italian music of that era. He studied under Marco Enrico Bossi in Bologna, ventured to Berlin and Paris, being profoundly influenced by Stravinsky's 'Le Sacre du Printemps'. He repudiated most early works, won composition prizes under pseudonyms, and fled to Rome in 1917 after Caporetto's defeat. He associated with Alfredo Casella and Gabriele D'Annunzio, faced fascist condemnation, and held teaching positions in Parma and Venice, directing from 1939 to 1952.
