Du Bose Heyward

Edwin DuBose Heyward was an American author, best known for his novel 'Porgy' which he and his wife Dorothy transformed into the play and later the celebrated opera 'Porgy and Bess' with George Gershwin. Born into a distinguished South Carolina family, Heyward faced health challenges as a youth but developed a passion for literature. With business acumen and writerly skill, he played a key role in the Southern Renaissance, contributing to literary societies and achieving fame with his creative works that often explored African American life in the South, albeit not without controversy.
