Edgar Yipsel Harburg, born Isidore Hochberg, was an American popular song lyricist and librettist who collaborated with many famous composers. He wrote lyrics to classics including 'Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?', 'April in Paris', 'It's Only a Paper Moon', as well as songs for 'The Wizard of Oz', such as 'Over the Rainbow'. Harburg was recognized for the social commentary of his lyrics and his commitment to social justice, including his advocacy for racial and gender equality and union politics. Born to Russian immigrant parents in New York City, he had a lasting influence on American music and culture.
