Martin Charnin (November 24, 1934 – July 6, 2019) was an American lyricist, writer, and theatre director. Best known for conceiving, directing, and penning the lyrics for the musical Annie, Charnin was integral to American theatre. His career began with a role in West Side Story on Broadway and evolved into writing, directing, and producing for theatre, nightclubs, and television. Charnin won three Emmy Awards, and his landmark, Annie, remains a cherished piece of musical theatre, exerting influence well beyond its initial run.
