More about Thomas Dunhill
Thomas Frederick Dunhill (1 February 1877 – 13 March 1946) was a prolific English composer known for his light music and educational works for piano. His oeuvre includes chamber music, songs, and the operetta Tantivy Towers. An educator and examiner, Dunhill contributed to the literature on music and promoted British composers through chamber music concerts. He combined teaching with composing, with works imbued with unforced mysticism, humour, and lyrical flow. During WWI, he served in the Artists Rifles and the Irish Guards, and post-war, his administrative roles in musical societies and his writings on figures like Sullivan and Elgar underscored his commitment to the music community.
